Tenth Local Legends Grant Winner
Congratulations to Tauranga Windsurfers Inc. (TWI) for being awarded the tenth $5,000 Local Legends grant.
It was a beautiful sunny day, with a fresh offshore wind blowing, outside the ‘Tauranga Windsurfers Inc’, (TWI) club house at Kulim Park and we were surrounded by brightly coloured windsurfers, foils, and wingers, with club members of all ages whizzing past on the water when we realised that windsurfing had changed a lot.
John, club president, told us they’re renaming their club to ‘Tauranga Windsports Inc’. He said “with the huge growth of wind and wing foiling, they need to encourage and include all types of wind sports in the Bay of Plenty region, not just windsurfing. They offer access to free and affordable lessons, equipment and hold club days and annual events, to remove the cost barrier and provide a safe and enjoyable environment that encourages people to get out from behind their devices and onto the water.”
TWI operates solely through volunteer’s, nationwide grants, and an initial donation of learner gear from Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy Trust (BOPSAT). They will use this $5,000 grant to purchase new boards, that are suitable for beginners and advanced users.
